Rescue Me!

A series of posts dedicated to getting the word out about Animal Shelters & Rescues!

In the last edition of Rescue Me! we visited Country Acres Pet Resort & Animal Shelter, this time we are doing something completely new…and TOTALLY AWESOME! I am absolutely in love with this shelter/rescue!

I adore animals of all kinds and I have always wanted to do more. Unfortunately, with two young kids at home it isn’t really possible for me to foster animals and I can’t dedicate much time to the local shelter either. I have always adopted my animals and help out when I can, such as helping to raise baby kittens that lose their mommy. (Although I am on a break with that seeing as I have a young baby of my own to keep me up at night.)

I wish we had something like this shelter around here….who knows, maybe after reading this post someone will think to start one! It is just such an awesome and brilliant idea!

Don’t believe me? Want to know what in the world I am rambling about? Keep reading and be in awe of these women!

Before we get started on the interview with San Anotonio R.O.C.K.S., Melanie wanted to say a little something:

Hi everyone! I’m Melanie and I blog at MommyMentionables.com. Other than being a mom, I also have a passion for rescuing animals. Ever since I was a little girl, one of my dreams was to open up an animal rescue. Late last year, that dream came true when I co-founded a foster-home based animal rescue in my city. Many people aren’t aware of the pet over-population crisis that my city faces, so the more exposure these pets get the better chance they have at getting out of the city shelter alive.

I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Becca for allowing me this opportunity. This is a cause that I am very passionate about and I am so grateful to be able to get the word out on these wonderful pets that need homes.

Who are you & What do you do?

We are San Antonio R.O.C.K.S. which stands for Real Options For Changing Kill Shelters. We are an all foster-home based rescue.

A small group of us came together in October 2012 wanting to make a difference, after seeing a countless number of animals dying everyday at our city’s shelter. These are perfectly healthy, friendly, adoptable dogs that are only given 72 hours to be re-claimed by their owners, adopted, fostered or rescued before being euthanized. We place as many of these ‘death row’ dogs as we can in foster homes to give them more time to find an adoptive family.

To date, we have rescued over 200 homeless dogs in San Antonio. We have done this by foster homes alone. Our foster homes are what keep us going. As long as we have foster homes to place these animals in, we will continue to rescue them.

 Where are you located?

We are located in San Antonio, TX. Currently, SA R.O.C.K.S. has no physical shelter. We rely solely on foster homes to rescue these animals. Our goal is to one day build a physical shelter so that we can save more. We currently have a shelter fund setup HERE. All donations made to this fund will go to help us build a shelter.

How many staff members do you have? Volunteers?

We are an all volunteer run organization with about 7-10 core members.

What types of animals do you rescue?

Mostly dogs but we are open to rescuing cats as well. It just depends on the type of animal our foster parents are willing to take in.

How many animals can you/do you house?

We have about 40-50 dogs in foster at any given time.

How can I help? Is it possible to donate online? If so how?

Yes we rely solely on donations 🙂 You can visit our website at www.sarocks.org and click on the Donate tab if you can help. Anything will help and no amount is too small.

What are the requirements to be a foster mom/dad?

All our foster homes are screened via a background & reference check prior to getting a foster animal. Our foster homes must also agree to keep the foster pet as an indoor pet while they are being fostered. They must also agree to provide food during the fostering period. SA R.O.C.K.S. covers all medical while in the program and can help with some supplies such as crates for crate training.

What are volunteering opportunities that you have?

We hold weekly adoption and fundraising events and we always need volunteers to help with our dogs, as well as help setting up and breaking down at events. We also need volunteers on-hand to help spread the word about our organization and our mission.

Who do I contact if I would like to volunteer?

Our volunteer manager can be reached at volunteer@sarocks.org.

If you are out of the area and can’t physically volunteer, there are many other ways to help us help these animals. Other than making a monetary donation, you can help by spreading the word about our organization and our mission. The more people that know about the current pet crisis in our city, the more help we might be able to get these pets.
